A: Holidays and Celebrations Vocabulary
Vocabulary associated with holidays, celebrating and having fun! There are pages on how to organize a party, different types of holidays, the vocabulary you need for airports, and how to describe weddings and types of entertainment.
Here's some useful vocabulary if you're organising an office party or a party at your house
for Christmas, New Year, or another special event.
Will you ask people to come in fancy-dress? (For example, there are Halloween-themed events at Halloween.) What sort of costume do you want people to dress in? Is it a period look ("Swinging 60s") or another type of look (Hollywood) for example?
Do you need to organise outside caterers, or entertainers? (This is especially useful for children's parties, where you might get a special children's entertainer like a magician.) Do you need to hire someone to run a disco, or can someone from Accounts rig up some speakers for music?
Many office parties are limited just to people from the office, but you might also invite employees' partners, or even customers or clients.
Formal invitations:
We'd be delighted if you could attend our party on.. (date) at… (place) at… (time)
Informal invitations:
You're all cordially invited to attend the annual Moss Bros party.
Please come to our party / lunch / dinner on… (date) at… (time).
Don't forget to add any essential instructions, such as directions (= how to get to your house / office) or to ask people to bring something (Please bring a bottle) or on what to wear / do (i.e. if you're holding something like aMurder Mystery evening where guests need to wear a costume and perform a role.)
Decorations add to the party atmosphere. If you're planning a theme, decorations are easier to think about. Otherwise, get busy with the coloured paper, sellotape, and scissors!
Is it a place for people to meet each other, have a bite to eat, and a couple of glasses of something to drink? Will you have special games or competitions that encourage people to stay longer? Will you give out presents (like asecret Santa?)
With all the catering, decorations, invitations etc to think about, you might need a team of people to help you. Delegate responsibility and make people in charge of catering,
invitations, etc.
Many people take their main holiday in summer, and although some people choose a last-minute break, others plan their holiday months in advance.
The beginning of the year is a good time for people to start looking at holiday brochures. Tour operators(companies that organise holidays) as well as travel agents (the people that sell holidays) give lots of information about holiday destinations and types of holiday. Apart from the traditional two-week beach holiday, you can choose from a range of holidays: a cruise (holiday on a ship), an activity holiday (a holiday that involves walking, cycling, climbing or other sports), a city break (a weekend or a few days in a different city) and so on. A lot of people choose a package holiday, where flights and accommodation are included in the price. But many people prefer an independent holiday, where they make their own travel arrangements.
If you travel independently, you will need to book your flights or train tickets. Unless you have an onward destination, you will probably book a return journey. Then you will need to make a reservation at a hotel, or another place to stay, such as a campsite (if you are camping in a tent), or a caravan site (if you are staying in a caravan), or a B&B (a bed and breakfast).
For all types of foreign holidays, it is essential that you check you have all your travel documents. Make sure your passport hasn’t expired, and that you have a visa if necessary. If you are travelling to some countries, you also need to make sure that all your vaccinations (protection against illness) are up to date. For some countries you might need a vaccination against hepatitis, or yellow fever, for example.
As your departure date gets nearer, you can start to plan the details of your journey. Perhaps it will be a good idea to buy a guide book, or a phrase book, if you don't speak much of the local language. Some people like to read up on (= get lots of background information) on where they are going, and find out about the places of interest and "must-see" sights. It's also fun to make a packing list, so you don't forget any vital clothes or toiletries.
It's also a good idea to buy local currency in advance, if your flight gets in (= arrives) in the middle of the night, when no banks are open. Most airlines also advise you to take out (=get) travel insurance just in case your flight is delayed or cancelled, or if you get ill and need to be repatriated (sent back to your country).
Don't forget to make arrangements for your pets and your house while you're away. Put your dog into kennels (a dog hotel), and leave a key with your neighbour just in case! Hopefully your neighbour will keep an eye on your house while you're on holiday! Finally, get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Nowadays it can take much longer to get through security and onto the plane. Have a nice trip and send your neighbour a postcard!
(( Teaching methodology ))
Principles of Language Learning and Teaching; By Douglas H. Brown
Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching; By Jack C. Richards & Theodor Rodgers
Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching; By Diane Larsen-Freeman
Teaching by Principles; By Douglas H. Brown
Developing Second Language Skills; By Kenneth Chastain
Second Language Teaching and Learning; By David Nunan
(( Linguistics ))
The study of language; by G. Yule
An introduction to language; by V. Fromkin & Rodman & Hyams
Linguistics and language; by J. S. Flak; Parts 3,5,6,8 (316-350)
Essential introductory linguistics; by G. Hudson; chapters 1-8, 13-17, 19, 21, 24
1) Testing language skills; by H. Farhady & A. Ja'far pour & P. Birijandi
2) Writing English language tests; by J. B. Heaton
3) Testing in language programs; by J. D. Brown; chapters 1, 2 (18-27), 3, 4, 5, 6(114-127), 7, 8
Testing Language Skills, From Theory to Practice by Farhady, Ja'farpur & Birjandi Testing for Language Teachers by Arthur Hughes و An Encyclopedic dictionary of Language Testing by mousavi An Encyclopedic dictionary of Language Testing
THE EXPLORATION OF SPACE
Humanity's exploration of space was accelerated with the Soviet satellite Sputnik on 4 October 1957, which carried aloft the first man to ever leave Earth's atmosphere: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. On 20 July 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human being ever to set foot on the Moon.
In fact, the Qur'an revealed that such developments and achievements would one day be realised. For instance, Allah draws our attention to this in the following verse:
O company of jinn and human beings. If you are able to pierce through the confines of the heavens and Earth, pierce through them. You will not pierce through, except with a clear authority. (Qur'an, 55:33)
The Arabic word sultan, translated here as "a clear authority," has other meanings as well: force, power, sovereignty, dominion, law, path, permission, give leave, justify, and proof.
Careful examination reveals that the above verse emphasizes that humanity will be able to move into the depths of Earth and sky, but only with a superior power. In all likelihood, this superior power is the superior technology employed in the twentieth century, for it enabled scientists to achieve this great feat.
THE VOYAGE TO THE MOON
And [I swear by] the moon when it is full, you will mount up stage by stage! What is the matter with them, that they have no faith? (Qur'an, 84:18-20)
After referring to the Moon, the above verses then say that people will mount up stage by stage. The termtarkabunna comes from the verb rakiba, (to mount, walk on a path, follow, embark upon, set about, participate, or rule). In the light of these meanings, it is very likely that the expression "you will mount up stage by stage" refers to a vehicle to be boarded.
Indeed, the astronauts' spacecraft pass through each layer of the atmosphere one by one, and then begin to pass through the Moon's gravitational field. Thus, the Moon is reached by moving through individual layers. In addition, the swearing by the Moon in Surat al-Inshiqaq 18 further strengthens this emphasis, meaning that the verse may well be a sign that humanity will travel to the Moon. (Allah knows best.)
MODERN MEANS OF TRANSPORT
And horses, mules, and donkeys both to ride and for adornment. And He creates other things you do not know. (Qur'an, 16:8)
The above verse indicates that in addition to the animals mentioned here, people will have various unknown (to them) means of transport. The following verse points to the fact that there will be such mass modes of transport as ships:
A Sign for them is that We carried their families in the laden ship. And We have created for them the like of it, in which they sail. (Qur'an, 36:41-42)
PLANE TECHNOLOGY
And to Sulayman We gave the fiercely blowing wind, speeding at his command toward the land that We had blessed. And We had full knowledge of everything. (Qur'an, 21:81)
As the above verse relates, Allah placed the wind under Prophet Sulayman's (as) command and allowed him to use it as a vehicle. There is a strong possibility of an indication here that, as in Prophet Sulayman's (as) time, wind energy will also be used in the technology of the future.
And We gave Sulayman power over the wind-a month's journey in the morning and a month in the afternoon... (Qur'an, 34:12)
The expression "a month's journey in the morning and a month in the afternoon" may be drawing attention to the fact that Prophet Sulayman (as) moved rapidly between different regions perhaps by using a technology similar to an airplane, or developed wind-powered vehicles that could cover long distances quickly. (Allah knows best.) There is thus a strong possibility that these verses point to modern airplane technology.
THE USE OF ELECTRICITY
And We made a fount of molten copper flow out for him. (Qur'an, 34:12)
One of Allah's great blessings to Prophet Sulayman (as) was "a fount of molten copper." This can be understood in several senses. By the use of melted copper, it may be referring to the existence, at his time, of an advanced technology that employed electricity. We know that copper is one of the best metals for conducting electricity and heat, and thus constitutes the basis of the electrical industry, which uses much of the copper produced in the world. The expression "flow out" may indicate that electricity can be used in many fields. (Allah knows best.)
